Search on Trade Me Property (also realestate.co.nz and OneRoof), book a viewing, then apply with ID, references and proof of income. Bond is capped at four weeks' rent and must be lodged with Tenancy Services within 23 working days; Tenancy Services confirms by email or post. If you have a pet, a separate pet bond of up to two weeks' rent may also apply (from 1 December 2025), and landlords must answer a pet request within 21 days and can't refuse without a good reason. Rent in advance is capped at two weeks. Letting fees and key money are banned; an option fee of up to one week's rent to hold a property is allowed, but it must be refunded or counted as rent if you move in. Never pay before you have seen the property.
